[2012/05/20 14:00] Arnold (gager): Hello Jimmy.
[2012/05/20 14:00] Bookworm Hienrichs: There it is.
[2012/05/20 14:00] Solace Fairlady: Hoy Master Jimmy!
[2012/05/20 14:00] Bookworm Hienrichs: Hello, Wildstar!
[2012/05/20 14:00] Wildstar Beaumont: greetings all
[2012/05/20 14:00] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Hello Wildstar
[2012/05/20 14:01] Linus Lacombe: Hello, Admiral
[2012/05/20 14:01] Wildstar Beaumont: hello ! :)
[2012/05/20 14:01] Jimmy Branagh: LOL
[2012/05/20 14:01] Solace Fairlady: Hello Miss renee!
[2012/05/20 14:01] Linus Lacombe: Master Jimmy, you appear to be sunk quite deep into the floor
[2012/05/20 14:02] Jimmy Branagh: Palisades disappears every time
[2012/05/20 14:02] Solace Fairlady: and Admiral Beaumont! *waves*
[2012/05/20 14:02] Wildstar Beaumont: Lady Solace .. :)
[2012/05/20 14:02] Kghia Gherardi: Group chat is filled with gremlins today.
[2012/05/20 14:02] Jimmy Branagh: Yes, the Salon chair is acting up
[2012/05/20 14:03] Jimmy Branagh: brb
[2012/05/20 14:03] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Herr Tenk, did you get the note I'd left about the levelling problem I'd found?
[2012/05/20 14:04] Jimmy Branagh: Well
[2012/05/20 14:04] Jimmy Branagh: The floor must have moved
[2012/05/20 14:04] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): For one.
[2012/05/20 14:05] Mosseveno Tenk: you are on the sim border
[2012/05/20 14:05] Darlingmonster Ember: is odd
[2012/05/20 14:05] Gabrielle Anatra (gabriell.anatra): It seems to do that. Especailly on weekends.
[2012/05/20 14:05] Darlingmonster Ember: I see chairs floating too
[2012/05/20 14:05] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Ja, and it wasn't a problem last month.
[2012/05/20 14:05] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me smiles. "Welcome, Ella."
[2012/05/20 14:05] Jimmy Branagh: My shoes are still sunk
[2012/05/20 14:05] Gabrielle Anatra (gabriell.anatra): As are mine.
[2012/05/20 14:05] Jimmy Branagh: Oy'll just stand back 'ere so nothin' else weird can happen
[2012/05/20 14:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): I apologise for the delays, Damen und Herren. I should like to make a few announcements before introducing our speaker.
[2012/05/20 14:06] Nika Thought-werk (robotnika): /me waves quietly to Miss Sid.
[2012/05/20 14:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): First - the Salon shall be taking a break after today until September, to make way for summer events and RFL.. I hope to see you all back in the autumn.
[2012/05/20 14:07] Solace Fairlady: /me waves to Miss Nika!
[2012/05/20 14:08] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Second - for administrative reasons, we are having to change the group. The new group name is very similar to the old one, of course, the 'AEther Salon of New Babbage'. Bitte, join the new group and remove yourself from the old one when you can, and we shall update you on Salon events promptly.
[2012/05/20 14:08] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): It is, as always, open enrollment.
[2012/05/20 14:09] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Now, I should like to introduce the Jarl of Orcadia, who is of a democratic enough nature that he insists everyone call him by his first name. Otenth Paderborn participated in the formal organizing of both the Unitarian Universalist and Quaker groups in Second Life. He will attempt a brief survey of religious spaces in Second Life.
[2012/05/20 14:09] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:10] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me applauds.
[2012/05/20 14:10] Linus Lacombe: `*.¸.*´ APPLAUSE `*.¸.*´APPLAUSE `*.¸.*´
[2012/05/20 14:10] Darlingmonster Ember: /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:10] Sidonie Ancelin (ancelin): /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:10] Jimmy Branagh: /me applauds the Baron, and The Jarl
[2012/05/20 14:10] Nika Thought-werk (robotnika): /me claps happily.
[2012/05/20 14:10] Rhianon Jameson: /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:10] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Good afternoon, and thank you all for coming.
[2012/05/20 14:10] Kghia Gherardi: /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:10] Solace Fairlady: /me applauds excitedly
[2012/05/20 14:10] Satu Moreau: Clap Clap Clap
[2012/05/20 14:10] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): shouts: If you did not just hear that greeting, and are here for the Salon, please move farther into the room.
[2012/05/20 14:10] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): /me smiles
[2012/05/20 14:10] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: As an editor, I fear I may be a bit word-heavy, but I have some slides to leaven things.
[2012/05/20 14:11] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: I will provide references and urls online later for those who wish to follow any particular rabbit-holes.
[2012/05/20 14:11] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: My very existence in Second Life owes itself to a colleague's description of a Unitarian Universalist church in SL, and my subsequent decision to investigate this virtual world.
[2012/05/20 14:11] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Here's part of an essay I wrote for 2Life Magazine (a now-defunct magazine on Jewish life in SL) in May 2007:
[2012/05/20 14:12] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): “For most of the last twenty years I’ve been a Quaker, so I wanted to find out if there were any Quakers in SL. I couldn’t find any group, classified ad, or location that was clearly religious (since Quake players sometimes call themselves Quakers, too). Search, of course, both in SL and on the SL website, is sometimes unreliable in its results, so I tried on the web as well. I found Rik Riel’s blog, where he identified himself as a Quaker and a resident of SL. I sent him an IM, asking if he would join a group I created, 'Religious Society of Friends Quaker'.”
[2012/05/20 14:12] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: It is amazing how little some things change, is it not?
[2012/05/20 14:12] Darlingmonster Ember: /me smiles
[2012/05/20 14:13] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: People found that group, without advertising. I found a sim called 'Quaker,' so I bought some land there and gave it to the group.
[2012/05/20 14:13] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: I built a simple meetinghouse and some benches, and people started hanging out and getting to know one another.
[2012/05/20 14:13] Nika Thought-werk (robotnika): /me smiles.
[2012/05/20 14:13] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Eventually we began worshipping on a regular basis and outgrew that small plot of Mainland.
[2012/05/20 14:13] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I hope that the slides load expiditiously.
[2012/05/20 14:13] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: There's now a lovely architect-designed meetinghouse on Sea Turtle Island, and people still worship together, although the group has been through highs and lows of participation.
[2012/05/20 14:14] Solace Fairlady: o i remeber that meeting ouse1
[2012/05/20 14:14] Darlingmonster Ember: nifty
[2012/05/20 14:14] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: I've seen many buildings in Second Life based on religious structures, but which do not host religious activities.
[2012/05/20 14:14] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: I'll simply give a nod in their general direction with these slides of a large cathedral on the Grotesk sim (no longer in existence),
[2012/05/20 14:15] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): That building took up an entire sim.
[2012/05/20 14:15] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I was flying quite some distance from it.
[2012/05/20 14:15] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: and this magnificent interpretation of Mont Saint-Michel, which houses a shopping maill.
[2012/05/20 14:15] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: There are also religious builds that are instructional in nature, such as the virtual Hajj.
[2012/05/20 14:15] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: As Krystina Derrickson says in “Second Life and the Sacred: Islamic Space in a Virtual World,”
[2012/05/20 14:15] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: “Because they are designed after emotionally-charged real life sacred sites, such as Mecca, and because their designers instruct users to follow behavioral regulations typical of real life Islamic sacred spaces, the virtual spaces are interpreted as amb
[2012/05/20 14:16] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): “Because they are designed after emotionally-charged real life sacred sites, such as Mecca, and because their designers instruct users to follow behavioral regulations typical of real life Islamic sacred spaces, the virtual spaces are interpreted as ambiguously sacred.”
[2012/05/20 14:16] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: This slide is the Al Andalus Mezquita.
[2012/05/20 14:16] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Of more interest to me are the religious communities that exist in Second Life.
[2012/05/20 14:16] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Here are some Unitarian Universalists sitting in their worship space in Lovelace, which used to be part of Caledon.
[2012/05/20 14:16] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: The UUs started out on a Mainland sim, Modesta, which was largely the effort of one man, Bizarre Berry.
[2012/05/20 14:16] Otenth Håkon Paderborn:
[2012/05/20 14:16] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: I conducted interviews and wrote an essay about the UUs in SL in February 2007, “Religious Reality in a Virtual World” http://www.uuworld.org/life/ articles/16206.shtml
[2012/05/20 14:17] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Back when people thought Second Life would be the 3-D web, the next big thing!
[2012/05/20 14:17] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: The UUs reorganized when Berry's so-called “real life” made him increasingly unavailable, and they moved to Lovelace, where they organized with a leadership group and bylaws.
[2012/05/20 14:17] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: They also at that time formed a residential community in the Mainland sim of Vigdorova.
[2012/05/20 14:17] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Today, they own and occupy four sims called UUtopia, which combine worship, educational, and residential activities.
[2012/05/20 14:18] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Unitarian Universalists are seemingly incapable of not using those cute "UU" substitutions.
[2012/05/20 14:18] Rhianon Jameson: /me chuckles
[2012/05/20 14:18] Darlingmonster Ember: grins
[2012/05/20 14:18] Linus Lacombe: /me snickers
[2012/05/20 14:18] Wildstar Beaumont: :)
[2012/05/20 14:18] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: The Anglican Cathedral of Second Life is another church with an active worship and activity schedule.
[2012/05/20 14:19] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: And likewise, the community of Mormons in Adam ondi Ahman.
[2012/05/20 14:19] Otenth Håkon Paderborn:
[2012/05/20 14:19] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Many, many groups have organized themselves in Second Life, from Jews to evangelical Christians to progressive Christians to Zen practioners to Tibetan Buddhists to Hindus to Wiccans.
[2012/05/20 14:20] Mudpie Mornington: church of elvis too
[2012/05/20 14:20] Darlingmonster Ember: !!
[2012/05/20 14:20] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me chuckles.
[2012/05/20 14:20] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I found quite a variety of origins in doing my research.
[2012/05/20 14:20] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): The two examples I'm familiar with began when people came into Second Life, and then wanted to get together with coreligionists.
[2012/05/20 14:21] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): But quite a few groups--and not only Christians--intentionally entered Second Life in order to educate or evangelize.
[2012/05/20 14:21] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: There's even a "Spirituality and Belief" section of the Second Life Destination Guide.
[2012/05/20 14:21] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: I have a few questions, and two more slides, to finish.
[2012/05/20 14:21] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Paradox has always been a part of my religious understanding and experience:
[2012/05/20 14:21] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: How is it that God feels both immanent and transcendent?
[2012/05/20 14:22] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: How is it that Julian of Norwich’s “all shall be well” rings so true, when things are patently not going well?
[2012/05/20 14:22] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: How is it that we are beings of earth filled with extravagantly expansive spirits?
[2012/05/20 14:22] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Religion in SL is no different:
[2012/05/20 14:22] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: In both Quaker and Unitarian Universalist worship services, how I can be sitting alone in front of a computer and yet feel a connection to other people through our avatars in SL?
[2012/05/20 14:22] Mudpie Mornington: :)
[2012/05/20 14:22] Darlingmonster Ember: nods
[2012/05/20 14:22] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: When everything about our appearance is constructed and is in no way limited by our physical reality, why do so many people say they feel more like their real selves in SL?
[2012/05/20 14:23] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: How can a virtual environment provoke deep questions about what is real?
[2012/05/20 14:23] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: As this Salon was announced, and as I've prepared for it, I've heard several people say they're not interested in the topic, or wonder what relevance “religion” or “spirit” has to Second Life, or otherwise express skepticism.
[2012/05/20 14:23] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: Skepticism, or even, dare I say it of a virtual existence, scientific materialism, certainly seems to be a virtue of New Babbage.
[2012/05/20 14:23] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: But if I may be so bold, this image, which is no doubt familiar to many of you, is one answer to those questions.
[2012/05/20 14:24] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: (This was a memorial to New Babbage resident Greg Merryman, at the 2010 Relay for Life build.)
[2012/05/20 14:24] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: The essential element--the spirit, if you will--of Second Life is life itself.
[2012/05/20 14:24] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: You and I are Second Life; we are Second Life.
[2012/05/20 14:24] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: We encompass not only prims, but death, and love--even that love and remembrance which endure beyond death.
[2012/05/20 14:24] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: And that, my friends, is why religion and spirituality are part of Second Life.
[2012/05/20 14:24] Mosseveno Tenk: /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:25] Linus Lacombe: `*.¸.*´ APPLAUSE `*.¸.*´APPLAUSE `*.¸.*´
[2012/05/20 14:25] Darlingmonster Ember: oooo
[2012/05/20 14:25] Mudpie Mornington: APPAWS!!!!
[2012/05/20 14:25] Darlingmonster Ember: nice quote
[2012/05/20 14:25] Jimmy Branagh: /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:25] Rhianon Jameson: /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:25] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me applauds.
[2012/05/20 14:25] Solace Fairlady: /me applauds!!!
[2012/05/20 14:25] Darlingmonster Ember: /me applauds
[2012/05/20 14:25] Mosseveno Tenk: For those that don't know, Greg Merryman died during build week of RFL 2 years ago.
[2012/05/20 14:25] Nika Thought-werk (robotnika): /me claps with appreciation.
[2012/05/20 14:25] Renee Caxton: /me allpauds
[2012/05/20 14:25] Darlingmonster Ember: nod
[2012/05/20 14:26] Mudpie Mornington: now tell us de answers
[2012/05/20 14:26] Rhianon Jameson: Indeed!
[2012/05/20 14:26] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me snerks.
[2012/05/20 14:26] Mudpie Mornington: an not 42
[2012/05/20 14:26] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Now is the time for questions or comments: for me, or for each other!
[2012/05/20 14:26] Linus Lacombe: They are answers one must find for oneself.
[2012/05/20 14:26] Darlingmonster Ember: raises hand
[2012/05/20 14:26] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): /me nods to DME
[2012/05/20 14:26] Elilka Sieyes: /me raises hand.
[2012/05/20 14:27] Darlingmonster Ember: do you have a large collection of 'spirit build' photos?
[2012/05/20 14:27] Darlingmonster Ember: that would be fun
[2012/05/20 14:27] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I don't! I'm not actually much of a photobug in either life.
[2012/05/20 14:27] Darlingmonster Ember: awww
[2012/05/20 14:27] Darlingmonster Ember: a flickr group might be nice then
[2012/05/20 14:27] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): But I do have a few older ones, like the Grotesk cathedral.
[2012/05/20 14:28] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I may put additional thoughts into a blog post, and point to some other photos.
[2012/05/20 14:28] Wildstar Beaumont: did anybody say photos ?
[2012/05/20 14:28] Darlingmonster Ember: grins
[2012/05/20 14:28] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me chuckles.
[2012/05/20 14:28] Jimmy Branagh: A photo trip would be noice. Oy dint know some of those places existed
[2012/05/20 14:29] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Wildstar has some brilliant photos of a large cathedral from last year's Relay for Life, which now stands in Caledon Mayfair, I believe.
[2012/05/20 14:29] Darlingmonster Ember: M Sieyes had a question
[2012/05/20 14:29] Darlingmonster Ember: nods it does
[2012/05/20 14:29] Darlingmonster Ember: and they are
[2012/05/20 14:29] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): /me nods to Mister Sieyes.
[2012/05/20 14:29] Wildstar Beaumont: I just did some photos of the Angligan Cathedral for the PP blog
[2012/05/20 14:29] Wildstar Beaumont: quite nice place
[2012/05/20 14:30] Elilka Sieyes: I was going to ask...you have many images of religious builds which resemble first life locations...have you encountered similar builds that are unique to second life, or which particularly exploit SL?
[2012/05/20 14:30] Darlingmonster Ember: aaaa, good question
[2012/05/20 14:31] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): The openness of the Quaker meetinghouse is one example
[2012/05/20 14:31] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): And I once visited a build that interpreted the chakras three-dimensionally
[2012/05/20 14:31] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): /me thinks
[2012/05/20 14:31] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Has anyone else visited such places?
[2012/05/20 14:32] Solace Fairlady: That was at last years Burn event I think, I had a look round one there, anyway
[2012/05/20 14:32] Elilka Sieyes: ah.
[2012/05/20 14:32] Darlingmonster Ember: I have usually found at least one build at RFL each year that lifts my spirit
[2012/05/20 14:32] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): The one I visited was on the Mainland, years ago.
[2012/05/20 14:32] Satu Moreau: I visited some kind of church in SL yeaaaaars ago, but I don't even remember what kind it was
[2012/05/20 14:32] Linus Lacombe: I remember one RFL cathedral appearing on Designing Worlds
[2012/05/20 14:32] Darlingmonster Ember: ...sometimes more than one
[2012/05/20 14:33] Gabrielle Anatra (gabriell.anatra): I've seen a few of the Buddhist places in SL over the years.
[2012/05/20 14:33] Elina 'Holmes' (elina.koskinen): I've seen the Finnish SL users have their own lutheran church somewhere
[2012/05/20 14:33] Wildstar Beaumont: I used to love St. Patrick in Magellan Kinvara and the services there
[2012/05/20 14:33] Elina 'Holmes' (elina.koskinen): but it was a simple building :)
[2012/05/20 14:33] Darlingmonster Ember: there was a build made of light one year that was very intense
[2012/05/20 14:34] Nika Thought-werk (robotnika): ((I used to attend Catholic Mass in Second Life at a church sanctioned by the Vatican ... or so the priest said. I had no reason to doubt him))
[2012/05/20 14:34] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): It is interesting how much of Second Life building reflects what we know in our physical world--and not just in the Steamlands, but elsewhere also.
[2012/05/20 14:34] Elilka Sieyes: /me nods.
[2012/05/20 14:35] Mosseveno Tenk: i was kinda shocked by that. i expected soemthing more abstract.
[2012/05/20 14:35] Gabrielle Anatra (gabriell.anatra): /me nods
[2012/05/20 14:35] Wildstar Beaumont: I guess we like to build out dream places here and our dreams are still rooted in RL
[2012/05/20 14:36] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Oh, and of course the UU worship space isn't at all traditional, but it still reflects a building that could physically exist.
[2012/05/20 14:36] Mudpie Mornington: just being in SL helped me unnerstand my Buddhism which I am Buddhist - like how we not real and yet are real in SL and same in First life!
[2012/05/20 14:36] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I'll cycle through the slides again.
[2012/05/20 14:37] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I find it interesting that, just as outside of SL, there are people who use religious spaces as part of a community, and those who turn to those spaces for special events.
[2012/05/20 14:37] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Marriages and handfastings.
[2012/05/20 14:38] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Some of the older religious buildings that don't reflect a community have had an active life as rental locations
[2012/05/20 14:38] Linus Lacombe: And there are those of us who appreciate religious architecture and can find plenty in SL to satisfy our interests.
[2012/05/20 14:39] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): And of course, people who have active religious lives outside SL who chose not to bring that into SL.
[2012/05/20 14:40] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I was surprised by the number of serious academic papers there are about religion in SL
[2012/05/20 14:41] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Did you say something, Wildstar? Do I need to kick local chat?
[2012/05/20 14:41] Wildstar Beaumont: a few photos I took a couple of weeks ago : https://picasaweb.google.com/ 105610436417319221137/ ChurchesOfSL?authkey= Gv1sRgCJKOj46Uu9n7iAE
[2012/05/20 14:41] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Heh.
[2012/05/20 14:41] Bookworm Hienrichs: When don't we need to? *chuckle*
[2012/05/20 14:42] Wildstar Beaumont: hehe
[2012/05/20 14:42] Wildstar Beaumont: you probably saw me "typing" when I was pasting the link
[2012/05/20 14:42] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Oooh. Thank you!
[2012/05/20 14:42] Jimmy Branagh: Noice shots Mr. Wildstar!
[2012/05/20 14:43] Wildstar Beaumont: :) thank you !
[2012/05/20 14:43] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Does anyone else have a question, or a line of conversation to propose?
[2012/05/20 14:43] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): We have about 15 minutes left.
[2012/05/20 14:44] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Herr Jarl, why don't I set out your gift and you can explain about that?
[2012/05/20 14:44] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Purchase for L$0, bitte!
[2012/05/20 14:44] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): This is a THiNC book, which you can wear on the center HUD or rez, with turnable pages.
[2012/05/20 14:45] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): It is sepia photographs made by a friend of mine at the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, of old tombstones.
[2012/05/20 14:45] Linus Lacombe: Oh how wonderful!
[2012/05/20 14:45] Rhianon Jameson: How lovely!
[2012/05/20 14:45] Jimmy Branagh: WHoa thx!
[2012/05/20 14:45] Darlingmonster Ember: keen
[2012/05/20 14:46] Jimmy Branagh: Thet sounds very interstin!
[2012/05/20 14:46] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Victorian cemeteries are bizarrely wonderful.
[2012/05/20 14:46] Solace Fairlady: Thank you your Serenity!
[2012/05/20 14:47] Kghia Gherardi: another excellent discussion
[2012/05/20 14:47] Linus Lacombe: As odd or creepy as it may sound to some, I find much peace in cemeteries. Often it is the location, or the silence, or the feeling of being part of history
[2012/05/20 14:47] Gabrielle Anatra (gabriell.anatra): I know that feeling.
[2012/05/20 14:47] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I didn't even think to include a cemetery photo as a religious space!
[2012/05/20 14:48] Bookworm Hienrichs: We have a couple here in New Babbage, if anyone wants a field trip.
[2012/05/20 14:48] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): There is a cemetery in New Toulouse, and at least one in Caledon.
[2012/05/20 14:48] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me chuckles.
[2012/05/20 14:48] Mudpie Mornington: where to draw the line for what is a religious space!
[2012/05/20 14:48] Wildstar Beaumont: there are a few in Winterfell .. Miss Serra loves them
[2012/05/20 14:48] Satu Moreau: Heh, I think the one cemetary for me that's been really memorable aside from in New Babbage was the one put up in honor of all the Lindens the labs let off
[2012/05/20 14:48] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Excellent question, M~ Mornington.
[2012/05/20 14:49] Darlingmonster Ember: good point M Moreau
[2012/05/20 14:49] Linus Lacombe: That which is sacred, has no one definition, and nearly any space can be sacred to someone.
[2012/05/20 14:49] Gabrielle Anatra (gabriell.anatra): Hm, I've seen that one. There are a few others there too.
[2012/05/20 14:49] Nika Thought-werk (robotnika): /me closes her eyes and focuses on the music in the background.
[2012/05/20 14:49] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I hinted in my talk that I think "religious" spaces are those that are used for that purpose, not simply anything that looks religious.
[2012/05/20 14:50] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Which reflects a real-life disregard for canonical consecration of space!
[2012/05/20 14:51] Mudpie Mornington: Church of Elvis
Members: 180
Founder: Elvis Faust

Elvis sold his soul for rock and roll and died on the throne for our sins.

[2012/05/20 14:51] Darlingmonster Ember: thank you M Paderborn
[2012/05/20 14:51] Solace Fairlady: Thank you Jarl, Baron, Salonistas all!
[2012/05/20 14:51] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): And I ignored SL phenomena such as the Church of Rosedale!
[2012/05/20 14:51] Solace Fairlady: Have a grand summer break!
[2012/05/20 14:51] Darlingmonster Ember: grins
[2012/05/20 14:52] Mudpie Mornington: oh yesh
[2012/05/20 14:52] Nika Thought-werk (robotnika): /me claps happily.
[2012/05/20 14:52] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Ah, I remember when they were active.

[2012/05/20 14:52] Mudpie Mornington: thank you!
[2012/05/20 14:53] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): As always, Herr Paderborn will be getting the full appreciation you've expressed by your donations to the tipjar.
[2012/05/20 14:53] Linus Lacombe: I suppose we can also give a few lindens to support the venue itself?
[2012/05/20 14:53] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Your financial support of the Salon space is also appreciated!
[2012/05/20 14:53] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Pay the signs around the sides, or the small airship out front.
[2012/05/20 14:55] Satu Moreau: Need to go rest some.
[2012/05/20 14:55] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Any last-minute tips to the speaker? I shall be picking up the tiphat.
[2012/05/20 14:55] Satu Moreau: Thanks very much, Mr. Otenth, it was an interesting talk
[2012/05/20 14:55] Nika Thought-werk (robotnika): /me curtsies to both gentlemen and walks off to her office. "Be well, Satu!"
[2012/05/20 14:55] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Danke, Herr Satu.

[2012/05/20 14:58] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): /me smiles
[2012/05/20 14:59] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I'm glad I put it on then!
[2012/05/20 14:59] Linus Lacombe: I feel I should have contributed more to the discussion portion of the talk, but I feel a bit brain dead this afternoon
[2012/05/20 14:59] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): This is the last song.
[2012/05/20 14:59] Sidonie Ancelin (ancelin): Thank you for the presentation, Otenth ^^ It was wonderful.
[2012/05/20 14:59] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): I am picking up the craft box, last call.
[2012/05/20 14:59] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I had no idea how long what I was writing would take!
[2012/05/20 14:59] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): But better to be too brief than to go on too long.
[2012/05/20 14:59] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): It can be hard to judge, ja.
[2012/05/20 15:00] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I thought it was longer than it turned out, but it was a fine length. I tend to go on too long.
[2012/05/20 15:00] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): /me chuckles
[2012/05/20 15:00] Linus Lacombe: If you have time, a practice run helps, I think. But time is a precious commodity.
[2012/05/20 15:00] Renee Caxton: I like the salons. I wish I remembered more often. The previous one I forgot about until after my Sunday nap
[2012/05/20 15:00] Sidonie Ancelin (ancelin): I didn't think so, Mr Otenth.. but it's also a subject I have a lot of interest in.
[2012/05/20 15:00] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Bitte, would you give a copy of your slides to Fraulein Bookworm?
[2012/05/20 15:00] Bookworm Hienrichs: He already did, Herr Baron.
[2012/05/20 15:01] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me smiles.
[2012/05/20 15:01] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Heh.

[2012/05/20 15:01] Linus Lacombe: Good night everyone.
[2012/05/20 15:01] Renee Caxton: I think the length of your presentation was fine, Mr Paderborn
[2012/05/20 15:01] Linus Lacombe: /me waves and vanishes
[2012/05/20 15:01] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Gute Nacht.

[2012/05/20 15:02] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): /me waits for his title to magically change to "emeritus"
[2012/05/20 15:02] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me laughs.
[2012/05/20 15:02] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): /me laughs
[2012/05/20 15:02] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Ja, ja.
[2012/05/20 15:03] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Done, allegedly.
[2012/05/20 15:03] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Miss Hienrichs, if you wait a week or so before putting up the edited transcript, I may have a blog post for you to link to with some more of the research I did.
[2012/05/20 15:03] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): It could be added later, ja?
[2012/05/20 15:03] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me nods.
[2012/05/20 15:03] Bookworm Hienrichs: And it may take me that long anyway. Busy times for me.
[2012/05/20 15:03] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me smiles wryly.
[2012/05/20 15:04] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Heh.
[2012/05/20 15:04] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): /me nods.
[2012/05/20 15:04] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): I had noticed you've been busy of late.
[2012/05/20 15:04] Bookworm Hienrichs: I'm going to have to work hard to get the photos up today. I'll be house-sitting all week.
[2012/05/20 15:05] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Danke for thinking of photos.
[2012/05/20 15:05] Bookworm Hienrichs: /me nods and smiles. "I'm certainly used to it."
[2012/05/20 15:05] Bookworm Hienrichs: Well, typist needs dinner, so I'd best be off myself.
[2012/05/20 15:05] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): /me chuckles
[2012/05/20 15:05] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Gute Nacht and danke.
[2012/05/20 15:05] Bookworm Hienrichs: Good night!
[2012/05/20 15:06] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Good night!
[2012/05/20 15:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (klauswulfenbach.outlander): Let's all go stare at our sleeping security person.
[2012/05/20 15:06] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Thank you again for asking me, Herr Baron.

[2012/05/20 14:16] Otenth Håkon Paderborn: I conducted interviews and wrote an essay about the UUs in SL in February 2007, “Religious Reality in a Virtual World” http://www.uuworld.org/life/
[2012/05/20 14:17] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): Back when people thought Second Life would be the 3-D web, the next big thing!
[2012/05/20 14:41] Wildstar Beaumont: a few photos I took a couple of weeks ago : https://picasaweb.google.com/
Open Enrollment
Elvis sold his soul for rock and roll and died on the throne for our sins.
[2012/05/20 14:51] Linus Lacombe: oh dear
[2012/05/20 14:51] Darlingmonster Ember: /me curtsies
[2012/05/20 14:51] Gabrielle Anatra (gabriell.anatra): /me smiles
[2012/05/20 14:51] Darlingmonster Ember: wonderful talk
[2012/05/20 14:51] Tanwy Hazelnut: /me giggles
[2012/05/20 14:51] Darlingmonster Ember: thank you M Paderborn
[2012/05/20 14:51] Solace Fairlady: Thank you Jarl, Baron, Salonistas all!
[2012/05/20 14:51] Otenth Håkon Paderborn (otenth.paderborn): And I ignored SL phenomena such as the Church of Rosedale!
[2012/05/20 14:51] Solace Fairlady: Have a grand summer break!
[2012/05/20 14:51] Darlingmonster Ember: grins
